Champions League Summary: Week 1
The famous football competition is back! This article aims to sum up the most important details of the first week of Champions League action of the season.
Over the course of two days, all 32 teams involved in the competition played their first Champions League game of their season. The 16 games were divided in half, eight games played on Tuesday, and eight games on Wednesday evening. On Tuesday, the biggest headlines were the games between Sevilla FC – Manchester City and PSG – Juventus. Manchester City had a rather comfortable night, winning 4-0, where new signing Erling Haaland scored yet another brace for his new team. Including this performance, he now has an astonishing 25 Champions League goals in 20 games. On the other hand, PSG won the battle against Juventus with a 2-1 result. Both of their goals have been scored by their superstar Kylian Mbappé. Yet another brilliant performance from PSG’s attacking trio including Neymar, Mbappé and Messi. It has truly been a pleasure to watch PSG this season so far.
Regarding Tuesday night’s games, there has been two other headlines in the news media. Firstly, after a disappointing 0-1 defeat against Dinamo Zagreb, Chelsea parted ways with head coach Thomas Tuchel. Secondly, shortly after the catastrophic performance against Shaktar Donetsk (1-4), the board of RB Leipzig has sacked Domenico Tedesco.
Wednesday night turned out to be a quite shocking one for Liverpool fans as their team lost 4-1 against SSC Napoli. It seemed like the Italian team was simply better prepared. The other headliner of the night was the game between Inter Milan and Bayern Munich, which ended with a 2-0 comfortable win for the Bavarian team. The first goal scored by Leroy Sané was the most beautiful one of this week’s Champions League encounters in my opinion.
